Trichords: Three Notes, Endless Paths

Les Tricordes : Trois Notes, des Chemins sans Fin

Each Motif is built on a trichord and its Mirrors, up to three for some, then explored step by step: alternating hands, back plectrum, octaves, leaps, legato, and finally the rest-stroke. Some 160 pages grow from these three-note cells.

New Techniques

Des Techniques Nouvelles

The rest-stroke, the sound of a style, is written here for the first time through colored slurs. From it come new gestures, such as the Rest-Stroke Impulse & Delayed Legato, where each hand must wait for the other.

Two Equal Hands

Deux Mains Égales

The left hand receives the same work as the right, including the rest-stroke, the hardest gesture for a right-handed player.

Harmony & Counterpoint

Harmonie & Contrepoint

Rarely found in Qanun playing, counterpoint is built here from the ground up, with the plectrum and with bare fingers.
